It’s Not Your Grandmother’s Wallpaper

February 22nd, 2012

Wallpaper is back and in bigger and more dramatic  ways!  It definitely is not your grandmother’s flowery wallpaper.  One of the big indications that wall coverings are hot is their use in recent runway shows during Fashion Week in NYC.

Have a Wonderful Holiday

December 23rd, 2011

partridge

Where has 2011 gone?  Does it seem time has sped up?  Have we gone into some kind of warp speed here on earth?  The end of the year is a great time to reflect and reevaluate if not our whole life, at least where we can find a little part of it to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of our days.

The year has brought new people into our lives, and we’ve had to say goodbye to others.  We’ve had milestone birthdays, trials and tribulations, graduations and letting one get his wings and leave the nest .  Our business has grown and given us exciting new opportunities for 2012.  We’d like to thank all those who have been a part of  a productive year, especially our customers and family members who have helped us grow.  We wish you the best of the best this next year.  Happy Holidays!

New York City Surprises

August 17th, 2011

Part of the fun of visiting NYC is discovering great places to stay and restaurants to dine in.  Our trip this week included great finds on both counts.  Searching for a good deal on a hotel during Gift Show week can be difficult, but we scored with getting into the Michaelangelo Hotel on 51st and 7th Avenue, close to theaters and boutique shopping.  We were met with a gorgeous lobby decorated in panne velvet covered banquettes in pale gold and burnt orange.  Lots of gilt, marble and  glossy wood.

Our room included two king size beds also done in the gold/orange combo, very plush and comfy.

As the hotel serves coffee and croissants in the morning, we searched for another place to eat with a little more protein to get us through another day of walking miles at the Javits Center.  By 9:00 a.m. we were in serious need of that first coffee and went to the first diner we saw.  Opening the doors to Ellen’s Stardust Diner was not what we expected first thing in the morning.  Apparently, along with your morning coffee, you get serenaded by Broadway hopefuls.

We had to admit the talent there was impressive.  It makes you realize how hard it must be to get that spot in the limelight on a Broadway stage.  And – by the time we had oour coffee and breakfast, we definitely had a little more spring in our step.

NYC – It’s Never Dull

August 16th, 2011

We just returned from another “hunting trip” to the New York Gift Show at the Javits Center.

New Gift Show_1442010

The trips to these shows are a combination of anticipation, excitement, amazement and sore feet!  The 600,000+  sq ft glass building was designed  and built from 1979 to 1986 and was one of famed architect’s I.M. Pei’s masterpieces.  It was decided in 2006 that it wasn’t large enough to accommodate the conventions.  A 1.7 billion dollar budget was set to add on to the structure but as with most budgets and governing bodies, the budget soon swelled to 5 billion dollars!   Enter a new governor, and that number was slashed back down to a reasonable 465 million to cover basic building and repairs.  It will be a 100,000 square foot expansion with 40,000 of that being exhibition space and is supposed to be completed in 2013.

GPPSlidePresentationp19

Will the two piers be replaced by this new space?  Time and $$ will tell. Pier 94 has 175,000 square feet of space for vendors and Pier 92 has 200,000.  Repairs definitely are in order for the Javits Center.  We were there during torrential rains and saw buckets to catch rain sitting  about on the floor.  Although the attendance and participation of vendors seemed good for the early part of the week we were there,  we missed several of the companies we were hoping to see.  It could be the costs and hassle involved in leasing space for the show seems too difficult or expensive.  For anything over 10 square feet of space, the Teamsters’  Union freight handlers must unload exhibitors goods.   The International Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners are hired by exhibit appointed decorating contractors to build out the space (hang drapes, lay flooring etc) whose shift times and fees are regulated by the contractor. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers must install anything electrical beyond a 10 x 10 pop up tent (???) with 4 or less lights where no ladder or tool can  be used.  Telephone set ups are also regulated by the IBEW.  In talking with one of the vendors,  he revealed to us the electrical alone was a $200.00 per hour labor charge.  All we could do was admire the undaunted fortitude American business people have to get their products out there and build their dream!

The Other Jersey Shore

August 9th, 2011

stone_harbor_aerial_122nd_0Ok- we’ve all seen “the show” Jersey Shore which shows one slice of the culture of the area. On a recent H&G “field trip” otherwise known as a week at the beach, we absorbed the upscale side of the area, enjoying the sights and loveliness of Stone Harbor, Avalon and Cape May.  Stone Harbor sits between a protected wetlands area and gorgeous white sandy beaches and offers shop after shop of enticing places to spend $$!StoneHarborDowntown1

Beyond how great the beach and sun was, what impressed us was the variety of beautiful architectural designs in the houses.  Round windows, bay windows, cupolas, decks all nestled in configurations that speak Summer!

Cape May also is special with more of the old world Victorian atmosphere.

We had to pick up a little something while shopping of course.  Our eyes were entranced by the paintings in the gorgeous  Gallery D’ May.

100_0929

The featured artist was acclaimed Russian painter extraordinaire Anna Razumovaskaya – who is also a dancer, musician and clothing designer, a true Renaissance woman!  One of us was very fortunate to obtain one of the last giclees of her painting, Intermission.  The work is amazing with the intense blues and layers of netting inserted within the paint – and there is a room with blue walls waiting for it!

The house that gets the top prize for the “Can you believe it?” category has to be the one commonly referred to as the Utz House.  Owned by Michael Rice, heir to the Utz Quality Foods empire of Hanover, Pennsylvania, this is a 40 room 14000 square foot estate surrounded by woods, beachfront and highway.  You simply have to slow the car down to ogle when passing by going into Avalon.

After all isn’t this what you need when you invite the friends and family for a fabulous week at the shore?

Shedding Some Light on Interior Lighting

July 27th, 2011

dinosauer light

When was the last time you bought a lamp or really any light fixture.  Only when we move or renovate do we typically come face to face with choosing a lamp.  As designers, we know how daunting that task can be.  What are the options? Who has what?  How do we know it will work in our space?  Will it be tall enough or too big?  Why can’t the lampshade go with the base better?

In the next couple blogs, we thought it might help to “shed some light” on all the dilemmas about lighting for the home and help those of you looking for some solid guidelines.

lampshade2Generally,  the hardest factors involved  in choosing a lamp is finding a lamp large enough to make a proportioned impression in the room as well as insuring it gives  you enough light for the space with the right kind of ambiance. The most common mistake is choosing a lamp that is too small.  Of course if the lamp is going to sit on a table, the table has to be large enough and in proportion too.  The lamp shade shouldn’t extend beyond the table edges and if the lamp is to be used for reading, the bottom of the shade should be at the same level as the person’s ear when seated.  A  floor lamp would naturally stand taller but be positioned just behind so as not to blind you should you look up.

The basic idea behind lighting design comes from creating a balance of light throughout the room that will highlight its architectural pluses,  add useful lighting for tasks and pop the features that should be accented.

jennifer garrigues diana el daher mb hampton th

Looking at this lovely bedroom from the recent Hampton’s Showhouse created by Jennifer Garrigues and Diana el Daher and shown on traditionalhome.com, you can see the play of light throughout the room during the day coming from the spacious windows and reflecting off the paint colors and art work.  But it is at night the hard work of lighting design shines through (no pun intended…).  The designers employed not just bedside reading lamps but floor lamps by the chair and couch and a ceiling chandelier!  No corner was left to lurk in the dark and any harshness from an overhead light was tempered by softening lampshades.  Each  area where you would want to curl up with a good book was also supplied with appropriately positioned light.  With lamps on, the neutral color shades would work across the room to create a warm and inviting space and importantly, not compete with the artwork in the room.

3_1299171920_steven_gambrel_ed0211_10

This glamorous living room designed by Steven Gambrel and photographed by Simon Upton for the February 2011 Elle Decor Magazine demonstrates how lamps can bring a room together with their generous size and color.  Using the airy  pair of chandeliers over the space and tall candle holders, lots of  dramatic ambient light can be achieved  for any special occasion.

Some design tips to keep in mind for lighting design:

Lamps give furniture permission to be used.  In other words, without light nearby a guest is simply left in the dark feeling isolated.

Lamps should be used both flanking large furniture pieces and slightly behind a persons shoulder to avoid glare in the eyes as well as on a diagonal or triangular layout in a room for good balance.

As a rule of thumb, to determine how much light should go in a room, multiply the width of the room by the length of the room to get the number of  square feet.   Multiply the square feet  by 1.5 to arrive at how many watts.  So a 12 x 14 room equaling 168 square feet multiplied by 1.5 needs approximately 252 watts.

Our next blogs will deal with the nitty gritty about pairing shades and lamps, how high a chandelier should hang and other practical aspects.  In the meantime check out some of our new additions to our interior lighting line.  The shades are already superbly matched and the proportions are generous.  Happy hunting!

Field Trip

May 10th, 2011

Our hunting expedition lately was a field trip to Pro Source flooring company, our wholesale flooring supplier for a meet and greet with several of their vendors.  They are the largest to the trade source of their kind in North America offering over 25,000 products.  They are unique in that they daily shop all home centers and other sources to insure they have the lowest prices available and can therefore pass the savings on to their designer clients.  We like that – alot!  They offer over 60 brands of carpeting alone and 40 brands of  hardwood.  They even carry leather flooring and cork.
tigressa
One of the newest carpets on the market today is Tigressa from Shaw Carpet company.  With the latest technology Shaw has created yarns half the width of a human hair with a tensile strength incomparable to other carpets yet with a super soft texture.  Its patented color process insures durable saturated hues that can stand up to matting and abuse.

Another product we were wowed by is by American Marazzi Tile Inc.  Their color body porcelain Riflessi di Legno looks like planks of  a hardwood floor with distinctive wood graining.  It comes in five wood colors and can span the rustic look of a mountain lodge to the sophistication of a Manhattan loft.  Brilliant and versatile!

e03

Their Soho architectural mosaic is a superb unique color body porcelain that comes in oversized, square or plank forms with the addition of 3 dimensional modules.  As inserts or panels, these mesh backtiles create sculptural interest with a sophisticated urban appeal.

Green is a major movement in the flooring industry as well as many other areas of the interior trades.  One of the main green products gaining popularity is cork.  Cork is a sustainable, renewable and a beautiful option for many areas of a home
soho

It has an insulating quality that helps capture the echos corkof large rooms and lend a hand to sound proofing.

cork1

It is easy to install, warm under foot, stain resistant and very useful in places like basements where moisture or high humidity could be an issue as it resists molds, mildew and bacteria.

Cork can take on the look you typically picture when you think of a wine cork – full of texture and light.  But it can be swirled like burl wood or dark like walnut, cut like mosaic or planks of wood.  It is versatile, textural and lovely to live with.

Flooring  isn’t the  only category you would find at Pro Source.
Their wall tile selection is quite large. As an example, with just one of the brands they carry,
Porcelanosa,  your rooms will soar into a new
dimension of style  and panache!

Spring Fling

May 4th, 2011
Bellevue

Thibaut's Bellevue wallpaper and fabric

With spring finally here, consider taking flight with new wings of fancy.

174760 Birds and butterflies

This whimsicle fabric aptly named Birds and Butterflies is printed on white chintz against a twining background of black gesture drawn  vines and blossoms.  This is a fabric (or wallpaper) from F. Schumacher that originated in 1960  in their Decorator’s Walk line.

What was fresh in 1960 will still give an upbeat modern look today for summery curtains or a light-hearted wallcovering.

173440 oiseaux et fleurs

Oiseaux et Fleurs in another F. Schumacher print available in four colorways perfect for an airy dining room or romantic bedroom.  We love the opened birdcage leaving to the imagination birds being freed to revel amongst the blossomed branches and  sing their beautiful spring songs.

174080 arbre chinois

Arbre Chinois is a linen print adapted by F. Schumacher from a British textile archive.  It’s bright happy colors are reminiscent of Chinese silk paintings and would bring a cheery look to any room.  This print is also available in  a blue on white colorway or one done in sage greens, cinnamon and golds.

april

Make a bold statement with gold metallic on an unapologetic coral ground from Thibaut wallcoverings.  Coordinating fabrics are available to go with this paper with a 25 inch repeat.  This pattern comes in 7  other colorways if bold isn’t your look.

Nothing says fresh like a new coat of paint color, fabric or wallpaper.  Let us help you choose some today.  Just give us a call or email us and we will be happy to help with your decorating dreams.  You can order any of the papers or fabrics above through us or we will help you to peruse many others.

Art at Home

March 31st, 2011

Art in the home has been an essential part of living since primitive man discovered different colored soils could be used as paint on the walls of their caves.  Many of us have preschoolers that see the same potential on a blank painted wall.  Sources for art run the gamut from exclusive galleries to websites with thousands of choices.  Some of us are fortunate enough to have talented friends or relatives that grace us with a gift from time to time.

Another work of Tom’s

And, some of us are fortunate to view the beauty and talent of what our children have created along the way such as the painting of a mountain meadow by Shelby Colson age 9 her parents have on display in their entry hall

Another family we know has a very talented college student, Casey Poehlein,  who has been painting for many years.  One of her self portraits is at the top of the stairs in the family’s center hall.

And another of her paintings hangs alongside the family room fireplace:

Even photos from a high school art class can hold a place of honor like these black an white pictures of a corn stalk and apple  Brittany Stein took which hang in her family’s kitchen.

We may not all have budding geniuses in our homes but we all often see those special unstaged moments we wish we could capture forever.  We are trying to help you with that.  The following photo was captured off a Facebook photo, touched up a bit and printed on canvas with a final giclee’ finish making it look like an original oil painting.  If this is something you would like to have done (no it doesn’t have to come from Facebook), contact mary@huntingandgatherings.com and we’ll get you going!

To Market, to Market …

February 6th, 2011
Late January and February brings a new holiday to the retail market – the opening of the wholesale markets across the United States.  Designers and  retailers flock to the major centers to see the latest and greatest of the spring and summer trends for everything from dishes to furniture, food to baby products.  Our trek was down to the Atlanta’s Americas Mart. This “market” is housed in three buildings 13,18 and 20 stories high in the center of Atlanta.  They are all connected with sky bridges making it as easy as possible to view the 5000 permanent and 5000 temporary showrooms set up  for the show.  At 3 miles per hour, walking 6 hours, doesn’t that mean we walked at least 15 miles the first day???

101_1397

It is always so exciting to be caught up in the biggest shopping event in the world, oohing and aahing over the newest in innovative ideas.  It is awe inspiring how many individuals turn their ideas and dreams into a reality and find funding and nerves to take it to the world and market it.
the tip of the iceberg in Building 3
the tip of the iceberg in Building 3
101_1394 One such example is our cousin Lily Winnail who
came up with the Padalily – an arm cushion to wrap
around infant seats to protect mommies’ arms while
carrying around their precious bundles.  With lots
of time and patience and a long learning curve, Lily
just won a spot in Baby’s R Us in NYC and online!
It was a thrill to see her goods displayed at the Mart.
Congratulations Lily!

The Markets represent vast fields of dreams and good ol’ American capitalism and entrepreneurship.
